Frequently a leader believes they are learning, when in fact they are simply being told what others believe the leader wants to hear. This happens in organizations of all kinds and sizes all the time.
If an organization actually believes that its greatest untapped resource is the brainpower, imagination, and energy of its workforce, three fundamentals are required - whether people gather in an office building or on a Zoom call.

Once people realize they can lead, they often get overwhelmed by where to start. Very often, aspiring leaders get discouraged because they tackle the wrong problem and fail to make much progress.
What I have seen over and over is that people always want to work against resistors, rather than work with skeptics. And this is the single biggest mistake leaders make. Trying to change a truly committed resistor is a waste of time and energy.

Pay, benefits, working conditions and perks all figure into this calculus. But for people with skills and options, the question that comes up over and over is “What’s it like to work around here?” This has always been true but it is particularly true now.
Hiring the right person is undeniably important and can be a tricky, lengthy, and expensive process. Retaining that right person is thus even more important and is becoming more and more difficult.
High-performance cultures are where systems of accountability are built & reinforced, & accountabilities are reviewed & recommitted continuously. Suppose you haven’t yet built these systems and no one is stepping up to accept accountability. Now what?
When accountability fails, there are some standard reasons given.
Clarity and alignment are vital to establishing accountability - as well as to re-establishing accountability when someone drops the ball.

Without accountability, there is no high performance, no positive change, no growth in a team’s capabilities.
A leader must deal with WHY there has been a failure to deliver against commitments.

In preparing for a tough conversation, you need to think about the other person or people with whom you intend to have this conversation.

Here’s the bottom line: if a tough conversation is necessary, get prepared. Think it through. Understand why you’re doing it, what you hope to accomplish and make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons.
