I wrote a paper about meta-discourse and personal attacks on the LKML 5 years ago; I'm glad to see Linus's apology, but wish it had come earlier when Sage and others attempted to raise concerns 5 years ago. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GBT0fRMRQNjlJMUfpflch7U3H_p-yITdxvgIL1keEVU/edit … (cc @_sagesharp_)

I wish the email would specifically credit those that asked him to change over the past several decades. But it's progress given the explicit apology and acknowledgment that his actions "hurt [people] and possibly drove [them] away from kernel development entirely."https://twitter.com/shanselman/status/1041449811570941954 …

Scott HanselmanVerified account @shanselmanI’m fairly impressed with this email from Linus. He’s finally (it seems) accepted he has challenges reading emotions and his behavior is unprofessional and he’s getting help. https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/CA+55aFy+Hv9O5citAawS+mVZO+ywCKd9NQ2wxUmGsz9ZJzqgJQ@mail.gmail.com/ …Show this thread2 replies 9 retweets 58 likesShow this thread -

And the truth comes out -- this was in fact an apology forced by reporting rather than an internally motivated change.https://twitter.com/noamcohen/status/1042540518582968320 …

Noam Cohen @noamcohenI’ve been reporting on the abusive culture at Linux over the last couple of months -- on Sunday, Linus Torvalds said he was taking a break to get help. It was a standard abuser non-apology. His employer, the Linux Foundation, admitted publicly they are like all helpless and don't know what to do. All in all, a fabulous display of nothing.
