For the record, Everyone in China know about what happened on June 4th, 1989. Chinese gov remind them every year by cranking up censorship to 11 around anniversary. Idk Western reporters who claim people in China don’t know are just esp stupid/cluess or deliberately misleading
In fact that applies to China reporting in general. I just don’t know whether Western China reporters are that stupid/clueless or deliberately misleading. I used to think people can’t be that stupid but I am constantly surprised...

The content of the cable is pretty laughable because we already have Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo and his friend Taiwanese pop singer Hou Dejian's eye witness account of what happened on Tiananmen Square which clearly contradicts the cable. Both stayed on the Square till the end
I was talking to 2 young Chinese girls earlier. They both knew #Tiananmen and all 3 of us are glad the student movement didn't succeed. I feel glad for China's future because Chinese people do not have an appetite for #ColourRevolution.
The Chinese people are the only ones that should decide if a movement succeeds or not. The pure arrogance of other nations thinking they can decide another nations fate.

The purpose of censorship is not to prevent people from knowing but to prevent people from talking. The Western reporters should know this better than most - they have been keeping inconvenient viewpoints out on the margins for literal decades.
I worked in Beijing 2004-2007 and my Chinese co-workers had basically heard rumours about June 4 but didn't know what was and wasn't real. It seemed a dangerous topic to discuss and, though I had the Tank Man video I thought it best for them and my family not to show it
