They know! When we did our count you could hear the birds laughing from a nearby hedge till we had given up. I am not yet able to identify a bird by its derisive laugh!

I sometimes include the birds I 'usually' see in the birdwatch count. My husband tells me that's not the point as those birds will be somewhere else but I work on the premise that it's more likely than not that the people near them won't be counting them!

This morning I had 24 mourning doves and a dozen goldfinches (in their winter greens) at the bird feeder
Together with some juncos, cardinals, housefinches and blue jays. Oh, and the squirrels, lol.
First winter I’ve had goldfinches staying around. -
Squirrels don’t count. Unless they’re flying squirrels?
