It damages kids so much to grow up witnessing mom being expected to be a masochist. And it definitely stunts men, and obviously it sucks the life out of women. No justification for it.

Yes! I was brought up in a family where both my parents seemed to accept they didn't have the lives they wanted and there was nothing to be done. And 25 years later they both completely freaked when I ended my (abusive) marriage. Some people see it as an endurance test.
