I’ve done this calculation with teen clients and parents quite a bit. For the teen, helps them work up more distress tolerance. For the parents they get so sad! So many of the parents have literally said “i can’t talk about this!” It’s just reality, talking about it or not.

So true, which is why you have to establish good communication and healthy boundaries BEFORE they become an adult. I find parenting a young adult frequently requires careful consideration regarding when to advise or intervene and when to let them make their own mistakes.
