At “regular” agencies, grad schools, and practices therapists are doing CEU trainings that tell them the only ethical response is affirmation, full stop. Do not trust that common sense will rule in your kid’s therapy zoom.

Yes parents try this but if you’ve hired a therapist you’ve hired the therapist to establish acceptable boundaries for sessions and boss you around a little when you try to break the frame.

Makes sense. I'd just seen therapists discussing this on reddit saying they didn't know how to deal with it, but I guess the psychotherapy sub is going to overrepresent people who are unsure and struggling.

Ppl who are super comfy with bossing ppl around don’t flock to social services, but it is essential that the therapist, really before anything else happens, establish “the frame” of sessions and do the limit setting throughout called “holding the frame.”
