Perhaps it's because I am a mother now, I would correct the tone myself. Gently but firmly. Say something like "there's no need to be rude" or "please don't talk to me that way". You shouldn't have to but it is a wake-up call to both the parent and child.

whew that wouldn't bode well AT ALL
The kid made a joke about killing himself + i said “that makes me sad, no jokes that make me sad” and dad told the kid he thought it was a good joke. Glowing red flag, correct?
