Perhaps it's because I am a mother now, I would correct the tone myself. Gently but firmly. Say something like "there's no need to be rude" or "please don't talk to me that way". You shouldn't have to but it is a wake-up call to both the parent and child.
Ok theoretically what if when you correct the kid for being insulting or very inappropriate dad gets defensive of kid and either explicitly argues w/ you in front of the kid or passive aggressively punishes you?
