We live in the world as it is and have to make decisions with all the knowledge available. If one of my children had such a vocation I would help them navigate their choices and understand the consequences as I had to do myself. It’s about balance.
There is no way I would tell anyone to go into social work, counseling, family therapy, or psychology. The only way I’m able to afford my social work degree is that I already had a PhD, opening the door to a job that paid enough to pay for me to go back to school. It’s amazing how people say “ask for help!!” while building a system where therapists are paid shit

This is why I have never pursued my MSW. It’s heartbreaking and I know there is a huge need but taking on that level of student loan debt feels irresponsible for me.

Years ago I had a wonderful girlfriend who got her MSW because her personal circumstances allowed her to. The world is a better place to have her practicing in it, but yeah, the barrier to entry is bull.
