I have p strong opinions about the protective factors middle class families push on their kids that wealthy families do not, and how lots of wealthy parents end up setting their kids up for adult substance abuse.

2nd thing: middle class parents are forced to get comfy w/ their kid being disappointed (they don’t get a pony!) + that’s informed by knowing adult life is a lot of handling disappointment.

3rd thing: middle class parents are more distressed by evidence their kid is a “slacker” + it’s bc their kid’s economic wellbeing is way more precarious.

Anyways if you raise a kid who can speak to authority figures respectfully, can put up w/ long term frustration + distress, and prides themselves on their work ethic that’s a kid who doesn’t need substances to escape from shame.

Upper class families think they’re being loving by going easy on their children and buying them stuff but they’re creating obstacles to their kid being willing to do the difficult projects that end up being the basis of self-regard.

Tbh poor families + rich families can have weirdly similar dysfunctional family patterns. Middle class cultural values are a real blessing to have been raised with.
