1st thing: middle class parents have way more of a “talk to me with respect if you want anything from me” attitude, + I do think that’s informed by concern about how their kid will talk to future bosses.

2nd thing: middle class parents are forced to get comfy w/ their kid being disappointed (they don’t get a pony!) + that’s informed by knowing adult life is a lot of handling disappointment.

3rd thing: middle class parents are more distressed by evidence their kid is a “slacker” + it’s bc their kid’s economic wellbeing is way more precarious.

Anyways if you raise a kid who can speak to authority figures respectfully, can put up w/ long term frustration + distress, and prides themselves on their work ethic that’s a kid who doesn’t need substances to escape from shame.

Upper class families think they’re being loving by going easy on their children and buying them stuff but they’re creating obstacles to their kid being willing to do the difficult projects that end up being the basis of self-regard.

What are some examples, and do you see other differences between UC, MC, WC and poor parents?

I feel as if you are using 'middle class' here as a euphemism for 'poor' whereas in the UK it's a euphemism for 'rich'. Whats a typical middle class household you're thinking of?
