Writing this down so maybe I stop needing to learn it: if someone catches a whiff of “I’m willing to grovel to be approved of by you” you eventually, inevitably need to cut that person out of your life.

You cannot set the scene for the relationship by being overly agreeable. It must be established early on that your agreeableness has very clear limits.
