SPOT ON, it’s not a “mental health epidemic”, people are having normal difficult feelings!!! Difficult feelings are not a health condition!https://twitter.com/RandyNesse/status/1263176750684499969 …

The pandemic is causing terrible mental suffering but talk about a mental health epidemic distracts from individual experiences of fear of sickness, loneliness, exhaustion, job loss, poverty…and the positive experiences of those finally freed from long commutes and awful jobs.

Caregivers who already had MH conditions are def experiencing big impairments in their functioning,ie. hitting their kids more. Absolutely I perceive the changes to my work day to be a part of a bigger MH crisis happening.

I think what people are misunderstanding is that I’m not saying there isn’t a crisis or that people are at large feeling extremely troubled right now. I just don’t think these emotional states are illnesses, as the terminology “mental health epidemic” implies

So yes I know people are suffering. ******I****** am suffering. I am the diagnosed “mentally ill” person who has been hospitalized multiple times and self harmed at age 11. I am not even close to denying human psychic pain. But I see it as human pain rather than illnesses

I understand why your critique can be useful but the kind of diagnoses the DSM and ICD enumerate are much broader than simply emotional responses to challenging situations. Ppl do have big bad changes in perception, mood, cognition and sometimes those kill ppl quickly.

I’m sympathetic to yr critique in part bc I am not at all convinced gender dysphoria should be a diagnosis. But I’ve had clients in manic paranoid states, and it was a v good thing they had medical treatment to access.

I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve stated in different threads relating to this god forsaken quote tweet of mine that I am not denying the existence of mental illnesses like bipolar or psychotic disorders. Like, at all. I just think emotions are commonly pathologized and I think it is
