But now I totally get it. Kids from safe, protected situations do actually need that kind of thing to START to begin acknowledging all the parts of the world they were protected from. 3/

Being on the flip side of it was bewildering, but any kind of “hey poor ppl exist and your moral worth depends on what you do for them” helps keep the children of the lucky from becoming silly, monstrous adults. 5/

We have a general entitlement problem in our culture. We are raising kids who can’t see all the blessings they have access to and can’t conceptualize their impact on others. 6/

It’s obviously an incredibly tricky accomplishment to pull off but if you can turn your teen onto the experience of using all their luck and blessings to create experiences of total relief for poor ppl, it will do SO much for their resilience and sanity. 7/

Also as weird as it was to feel just a lil bit like a zoo animal when the wealthy kids came to the inner city, it’s the kind of interesting experience I’m glad I got. So we were all winners, thanks Jesuits! /the end.
