There's a Kickstarter for a "Free Anime Streaming Service" that got super popular overnight, but the marketing for it is misleading at best. The screenshots show popular anime like Attack on Titan, Sword Art Online and FMA, but there's no way they can even touch those licenses.
I am so so so on board with anime becoming less corporate and breaking the monopoly. But this feels naive at best, predatory at worst. There is no way a crowdfunded effort can beat the current streaming services, who are paying massive amounts in licensing.

People have already donated over $100,000 to this and I really do fear that a lot of it has to do with a lack of information about the industry (as well as the sponsored vouching from a popular webcomic creator).

The Japanese anime industry is "moving towards" selling popular shows for massive amounts to streaming services owned by megacorporations. This might have worked 10+ years ago. But you're gonna need Netflix money to compete in 2021.
