Yeah, so this is basically just harassment at this point. The translator was even able to produce police records to explain the translation. Here's the issue: We're in a golden age of internet harassment. I've heard from multiple translators that they don't want to be credited publicly for their work because even with no knowledge of the subject, people will attack you over perceived discrepancies or "agenda".
There are ways to discuss the topic of translation and we should be able to collectively listen and learn more about the subjecy. This is just a way of getting translators to go uncredited and never talk about their work.

Specifically regarding Kanemitsu, he has almost definitely spoken to Anno regarding the historical implications of some of the word usage. There are other researchers in the above thread who understand the historical context as well.
From what I understand, the Japanese version says the attack was by a 'sect' (using the English word). It seems every other translation of it translated it as 'sect', but the English one changed it to 'leftist'. It is a little suspect
Not when you consider how close the translator is to Anno himself and the 90s context that would've informed both the choice and the plot point.
I'm still gonna go ahead and say it's a little suspect. The original was using an English word that fit fine in the context, and Netflix's other translators didn't feel a need to change it. It's only the English one that reworded it to make it more expressly political
Wasei-eigo are phrases in English without the same direct literal translation and meaning. As someone who isn't a translator or a researcher, I'm willing to trust those who are, especially when they source their findings.
When everyone else who tackles it translates it the same way except one, the one who did it differently usually isn't the one who did it right 
There's no such thing as a singular correct translation. This translator is also close to Khara and Anno. You are free to believe in your own better translation, but the facts are that they can source their reasoning and they are credible in regards to the context of NGE.
(Legit Curious Q.) I have not followed this and in regards to harassment, it's wildly useless to get any change. I'm confused as to how poor language and grammar /wouldn't/ fall under a translators purview?
Oh, it would. I just don't think all criticism needs to be directly @-ed to a translator. (Although overbearing companies and time can also be a factor)

I found the translator referring to a police website but even the dictionary says the word セクト is usually for left wing groups so yeahhhhh Idk. I think people can disagree if they want but...
