Gretzky was surpassed before his career was over. His records are a function of his peak being spent during a shocking spike in historical scoring which rapidly deflated at the moment a better player came along.

Once the size and speed of the athletes took a jump forward, he couldn’t do what he did before. He was dominant among the class of athlete who played the game in his time.

Gretzky was leading the league in assists at 36/37 years old. He wasn't putting up 2+ ppg anymore but that's because the dude was 37. 9 Harts in his first 10 years in the NHL (8 in his first 8). That's dominance relative to his league/era even Jordan never demonstrated.
