The Biden Admin. now has more Turkish women serving (3) than the entire Erdogan Cabinet (2). Women in Turkey won the right to vote a decade before those in France. A female Prime Minister assumed office in 1993. The first female President of any Constitutional Court: Turkey.

The decision not to release Osman Kavala today is indefensible: it is in breach of an order of the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights and will now lead to a stand off with the Council of Europe which Turkey joined in 1950. Another very dark day.

One of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements of the world, Adana, seems to have been designated a dumping ground for UK plastics. 241 lorryloads of plastic waste arrive every day from Europe. When did Turkey decide to become Europe's dustbin?

The Turkish Constitutional Ct has held the access ban on to be unlawful, ordering the first instance court to lift the ban with immediate effect. A very good decision for the people of Turkey. The key question is whether they should have waited over 2.5 years for it.

Blocking access to & other social media platforms at the height of a humanitarian crisis is not only a violation of international legal obligations but also deeply irresponsible. I have seen no formal decision for this measure or it’s underlying reasons. Heartbreaking

A very big day tomorrow for Turkey and for democracy worldwide. This is undoubtedly the most important election in the Republic’s history on the year that it celebrates its centennial. Peace at home, peace in the world 🇹🇷

29.10.1923. A secular and democratic republic that derives its sovereignty from its people. These are the principles on which Turkey was founded 97 years ago. Every attempt in our history to depart from them has led to a nation impoverished. Cumhuriyet bayramımız kutlu olsun.

This must stop. This is not a military target: these are Turkey's very brightest students who have decided to pursue their constitutional right to protest an egregious appointment to the head of their university. Egregious because the individual is unqualified #BogaziciUniversity

There is an enormous disparity between the numbers coming from the State-run news agency (Erdoğan well ahead) and the other independent news agencies (Erdoğan not well ahead) - the international press needs to take care in presenting the full picture.

Yesterday’s elections in 🇹🇷 were always going to be important but now it’s clear they represent a key moment. It’s not about who has lost, it’s about what has lost: the rhetoric of division (&latterly hate) that has plagued us for too long. Now we must spread hope&build, together.
