We respect the concerns of patients but the fear that biosimilars are not safe is 10 years out of date. The current evidence is clear: they're clinically equivalent, no added risk, based on experience w switching in BC and Norway, and 10 years of biosimilars in Europe overall.

  10. Biosimilar medications can generate cost savings and increase access to care across Canada. British Columbia will save nearly $100M over the next three years, and Alberta is projected to save $227M to $380M over the next four years, to be reinvested back into the health system

The chart here shows the similarities between versions of biologics (red) and biosimilars (blue). There's natural variation anyway as using living cells means they can't be exactly the same every time. However that does not affect their effectiveness.

Correct. One-time, ad hoc, short-term deals with one manufacturer undermine the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance and undermine the estimated $227-million to $380-million we estimate to save in three years with the biosimilars initiative. It doesn’t add up.

Alberta will be the third province to expand use of biosimilars, following BC and Manitoba in giving patients safe and effective therapy at lower cost. In Europe, biosimilars have been used since 2006 and have proven to be safe.
