This is a watershed moment in election law. For the first time, a federal court ruled that conditioning rights restoration on the payment of costs & fees constitutes a poll tax. #JonesvDeSantis @ACLU @ACLUFL @BrennanCenter @NAACP_LDF @splcenter

We fought for: Bonnie: http://bit.ly/3cHOC5F Diane: http://bit.ly/2VSs0Zv Lee: http://bit.ly/3eNfrXZ But because CLC brought this as a class action, today’s ruling applies broadly to all voters seeking rights restoration in Florida.

Thanks to the tireless work of CLC and its partners, states can no longer deny people access to the ballot box based on unpaid court costs and fees, nor can they condition rights restoration on restitution and fines that a person cannot afford to pay.

Should've been the end of it when Florida voters chose this. Thanks for taking it up when that wasn't enough!

It’s also a win for your Constitution. Allowing the state to determine which adults may vote pretty much defeats the whole purpose of voting in the first place.

Does this mean the Florida can’t impose a poll tax now? It’s so much like the GOP to have a poll tax.

Poll taxes are unconstitutional via both the 24th Amendment for federal elections & via Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections (383 U.S. 663 (1966)) for state elections, yes including local elections.
