Third paragraph, second sentence - replace "competitive" with "highly populated" and you have the reason for keeping the current system in place. Perhaps you should try promoting candidates who appeal to a broader spectrum of voters.

The electoral college demonstrably disenfranchises more people than popular vote would so by all means, it appeases a narrower spectrum of voters - f.e. less educated white males. - Show replies

No no the electoral college is just another example of how the USA has it right and the rest of the world has it wrong, despite a big part of the rest of the world ranking far better on most democracy & citizen happiness metrics. See health care, guns, the judicial system, etc.
