Women have long played an indispensable role in the fight to secure and protect the right to vote and participate in our democracy. On #InternationalWomensDay (and every day), we salute and thank them. #IWD2019pic.twitter.com/PLpwNYCdUE

Shirley Chisholm represented NY-12 in Congress from 1969 to 1983. In 1972, she launched a campaign for President of the United States, becoming the first woman to compete for the Democratic Party nomination, and the first black presidential candidate of any major party. #IWD2019pic.twitter.com/YHDro8WolE

As we fight big battles to protect and strengthen our democracy, remember that important change doesn't happen quickly, or on its own. 72 years of unrelenting activism passed between the Seneca Falls Convention and the passage of the 19th Amendment. #IWD2019pic.twitter.com/LYE0E5r5LH

Civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer was continually blocked from registering and voting in her home state of Mississippi by "literacy" tests and poll taxes. She helped thousands of other black voters to register, and co-founded the National Women's Political Caucus. #IWD2019pic.twitter.com/uDfPIzXPeH
