Cries in 10:37 to get from Copenhagen to Amsterdam (assuming all trains are on time...). It's really embarrassing how bad some of these connections are; Amsterdam-Berlin in particular. Still taking the train when possible.

I agree, it's so close, that particular connection is terrible. 10:37 doesn't seem likely. More like 13-14?

Do you know what system is used to calculate the travel distances? I travel between Amsterdam and Munich quite frequently and train trips take 9h+ (not 7.5), also according to NS Internationaal.

No idea and several of them are ... optimistic

I once went to Greece, "only three hours flying". That's not a good indicator ('fact'? ). I took us 13 hours from door to door. When you go by car you calculate those door-to-door times, why not when by plane?

Suppose you are a parent with two young children. This rule turns a one-day trip into a three-day trip. So I have some concerns.

Suppose you can get a trans-Atlantic flight reimbursed. The real question is, "do I absolutely need to take that flight?". For many conferences, I am not so sure.

So environmental cost of train + overnight hotel stay (including pro rata impact of hotel staff work and travel) < impact of flight.

Great idea if you have a train station with 100 miles…
