Quite a surreal feeling to head back out for an observation flight to Whakaari White Island in the aftermath of the December 9th . Still incredibly hot gas and steam coming out, and the lake is reformed, but the old dome structure is gone.

Was looking for something good after a terrible last week, hoping to complete my 2019 goal of 100 bike commutes. At 95/100 and a total of eight possible rides remaining to make up the numbers....I had a bit of an oopsie that will put me out for the rest of the year. 2020 maybe?

Devastated to hear of the news of fatalities in today's White Island eruption, my thoughts are with the families of those affected. I was shaken after seeing the webcam views in the immediate response minutes after the eruption occurred

It's only taken 7 years since my BSc, and 5 years since my MSc, but these expensive pieces of paper have finally made it in to frames and on the wall! Some times done is better than perfect

The weather was touch and go to start with, but last weekend turned out to be a stunning day to slog up to the crater of and ski/board down with . Great to get the crampons back on again

Couldn't have asked for sunnier weather to fly six UAVs at Whakapapa Skifield on Mt Ruapehu to monitor public response to a lahar warning system test

Work today involved a ski field alarm test in lahar-prone valleys at Ruapehu, witnessed from above by 6 UAV. These fine pilots did an amazing job. We hope to quantify the public's response. Oh and it was fantastic weather for... working

Another major bucket list item ticked, maybe two (I'm making a habit of it): watching strombolian eruptions light up the sky and fresh lava pour down Sciara del Fuoco of , in the Aeolian Islands of

A BIG tick of the bucket list, finally climbing Etna on Tuesday, and returning again with today to drive near to the top, beautiful views up (and down) the mountain, walking over fresh lava (from last week! right in image) and even fresher ash fall – mjesto: Etna
