They slashed payments at the last election, at the last election making it very challenging for some MPs that lost their seats. MPs also have to wrap up all their affairs after the election, unpaid, although they can keep some staff on for a limited period to help wrap up affairs. That is a lot of hassle extracting yourself from leases and contracts, especially when it's a mid-term election.

I was fortunate in that my wife works, and was able to support me until I could resolve all my affairs and then return to a job in my old line of work

Also worth noting that IPSA, whilst full of lovely people, is a pretty shambolic organisation, and I've never had a job with worse expenses than when I was an MP. The days when MPs could make money on property and claim for things freely have well and truly (and rightly) gone.
