    Today is Candlemas, festival of light, 'forðy on ðissum dæge wæs þæt soðe Leoht, Crist, geboren to þam temple' ('because on this day was the true Light, Christ, carried to the temple'). An Anglo-Saxon sermon for this ancient and beautiful feast:

    This letter was sent in protest against the Council of Constance's condemnation of the reformer Jan Hus, who was burned at the stake for heresy in 1415. Imagine what a painstaking job it must have been to attach all 400+ seals! University of Edinburgh Library, Coll-1698.

    February 2, 542 CE: Justinian solidifies the celebration of Candlemas in Constantinople & elsewhere . The holiday celebrates the purification of the Virgin Mary, according to Mosaic law, 40 days after childbirth. Only then could Mary return & Jesus be presented in the Temple.

    February 1 is the feast day of St Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland’s patron saints. Medieval accounts of her miracles stress Brigid's association with food and hospitality, like her cow that could be milked 3 times in 1 day. BM de Valenciennes, MS 838 f. 63v.

    Feb. 1, 1902: Archaeologists from the German Oriental Society excavating @ the Egyptian site of Abusir near Memphis discover a lost 4thC BCE fragment of Timotheus' Persians which is likely the earliest surviving papyrus of a Greek text ever found in Egypt.
