"The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists."
—Charles Dickens
Whoa—>Microsoft Bing's release of ChatGPT imminent. "The search results page won’t be going away. You’ll be able to toggle between search and chat from the toolbar."
How this changes behavior and if expectations are met?
H/T:
Google is asking employees to test potential ChatGPT competitors, including a chatbot called ‘Apprentice Bard.’
It uses Google’s conversation technology LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications.
They better spruce up that name! Jeez.
A post by Gary Ilyyes on Linkedin caught my eye.
Don’t Use Relative Paths In Your Rel-Canonical.
Relative paths may confuse search engines treating it as a different URL. Yikes
Trying to convince dev is no easy task.
vs. death and destruction from many threads.
Def. agree indexing is a blind spot. G is capable of a multi-pronged solution. How they respond we'll have to see.
Were they delaying syndication? If I published on Monday I'd syndicate posts a few days later. Cross site Canonicals are weak signals! Who gets author credit on syndicated site? Which has the higher Authority and Trust. If it's the syndicator good luck!
Apple’s ad business is growing fast. There’s more ads inside their native apps. Ad biz is estimated to reach $30 billion by 2026…
Seems like Apple will have to modify its privacy policies especially if they launch a search engine. Time will tell.
"Extensive evidence that the CNET AI's work has demonstrated deep similarities to articles published elsewhere, without giving credit... It looks like the bot directly plagiarized the work of Red Ventures competitors, as well as human writers at Bankrate"
https://futurism.com/cnet-ai-plagiarism…
CNET pauses publishing AI-written stories. Until now, most staff had very little insight into the machine that was generating dozens of stories appearing on CNET.
The tool being used was proprietary.
Annoyed with Twitter’s split feed: For You and Following?
I’m using then desktop app version on Mac OS. Better than mobile.
Hurry before they update it.
Terrible decision. There’s no default preference nor an option to swipe to trending and followed topics. Things continue to go in the wrong direction..
The “For you” and “Following” tabs replace “Home” and “Latest” and will be pinned to the top of your timeline so you can easily switch between them. Swipe to switch timelines instead of tapping the icon.
I didn't know Hamlet personally or well, but Bill and I chatted a lot... A real LOT. I'm fairly sure he'd be right there with me HATING the overblown hype. The interesting thing isn't how well a machine can put language into patterns, but how it can differentiate fact & Fiction.
today: we've switched to *daily* free guest credits rather than monthly.
This will make the best PAA research tool essentially free for many people who only need light usage now.
Give it a go! https://alsoasked.com😊
No denying the landscape will shift but it’s 3-4 years out IMHO. Many hurdles: legal, user experience, costs, potential for scandal. Personalization is another area that could be a double edged sword.
'Google has everything it needs to counter ChatGPT.'
BREAKING: Pelé has died at 82. The soccer star rose from humble beginnings in Brazil to become one of the sport's best players ever — dazzling fans, teammates and competitors alike.
In order to understand why ChatGPT can't replace Google Search, it's useful to understand the early days of web search and the role that PageRank played. 1/n
Google is essentially continually cleaning its web corpus (scraping and evaluating pages). A replacement will have to duplicate all of that and then figure out how to update the LLM.
ChatGPT shows a lot of potential. It certainly reminds us that virtual assistants did not live up to expectations.
I'm more worried about disruption in places such as academia more than Google.
Big news! I just tweeted this week it hadn't arrived yet. Well, here it is (and more)! -> Chrome rolls out "track price" functionality, auto-discount codes at checkout, the ability to price check products via Lens, & "check out fast with Autofill" https://glennga.be/3PsBlm8
