Trying to argue that an undemocratic body should be more democratic is "idiotic" why, exactly?

-
Because we're not a democracy lmao
-
That's not really an answer though, is it? Are you attempting to argue that The Untied States of America wasn't founded on Democratic ideals? We've, at various points in our history, made strides towards making the process more democratic, eg. 17th Amendment

Furthermore, the founders did not intend for the Senators to be directly elected by the population. They were to be appointed by the state legislators, the representative body of the STATES

That would be the House of “Representatives” which is based on POPULATion! Get it? Popular? You don’t need two Houses! The purpose of the Senate is to put states on equal footing—so the populous areas can’t boss the little guys around ( which seems to be the desire of the Dems).

Popular votes are the basics of ANY democracy
-
In a pure democracy, yes. But America is not a pure democracy. We're a democratic republic.
-
No, America is a corporate driven = money driven republic. This has nothing to do with being democratic. Both conservatives and so called liberals refuse to question the power of corporations. People are just garbage and money machines in their eyes

Who thought the 17th Amendment was a good idea?
-
The overwhelming majority of Americans at the beginning of the 20. century. The old system of powerful men electing other powerful men was ripe with corruption, and everybody could see it.
-
It also alters their mission of being advocates for the state, and makes them parallel representatives. Still have powerful ppl involved
-
Yes, it alters their mission from representing states to representing the people of that state, but why is that so bad? Most Americans identify as Americans first, and as residents of their state second, since the Civil War. The popular vote for senators is a reflection of that.
-
Senate is supposed 2b check on fed pwr against things states would be legally bound 2. Senators r no longer answerable 2 their state & disrupts balance of representation. Ppl have influence w/state vote. In this case I’m a bit of an originalist - thought it was a great design.

Do the public schools still teach Civics?

Do they even teach civics in schools anymore? Their lack of knowledge on how our government works is quite scary.

You're hundred years behind history. A duly passed constitutional amendment has made the senators elected by the people of a state, representing them and not the state itself or its government.
