One is used by the “right” to spark irrational fear in Americans and the other is used by “left” to explain a system of government almost exactly the same as what we have now only people are provided with basic services.. like most other developed countries of the world.

I'm a conservative, but I'll take a stab at it. I think the difference the pro-socialist lemmings see in the two terms, is the level of tyranny involved. "Democratic", to them, conveys a level of consensus and cooperation.
