According to the , 81% of home heating fire deaths involved portable space heaters. Anything that can burn should be at least 3 ft. away portable heating units. Take the extra step by maintaining a “kid-free zone” of 3 ft. or more around these heat sources for safety.

The research shows that 48% of home heating fires occurred Dec.-Feb. Having a nice setting around the fireplace is a great way to enjoy its warmth & glow. Materials used to make furniture can be highly flammable. Always keep furnishings a safe distance away from the fire.

Do not use your oven, ranges, or other heat-generating cooking appliances to heat your home. By doing so, you pose multiple, extremely dangerous fire hazards to include the risk of fire and burns. Ovens are meant to bake and make a roast—otherwise, you could become toast.

Just as you would for kids, furniture, and objects, keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from outdoor heating equipment. Children should not operate outdoor portable heaters. When the area in which they are used is not occupied, turn them off.

A crackling fire in the fireplace is warm and cozy, but a fireplace can also be a significant source of home heating fires. Make sure it has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Enjoy the ambiance and do so safely.

Driving a classic Beetle is fun, but if you’re carrying firewood, you could have some unwanted hitch hikers. Moving infested firewood can be very detrimental by the spread of invasive forest pests throughout #CA! Always buy it where you burn it. Visit firewood.ca.gov.
