All fires are named for the location where they start.
Is it just me, or is the #CampFire an unfortunate name for a devastating wildfire?

I understand that. It is still an unfortunate name.

Wildfires are named at the time of dispatch and put into the state’s resource ordering system. This is to allow for quicker ordering of resources. Usually it is based off of the physical location where it started. Not much thought goes into it when it happens.

Doesn't make the name sound any better. It minimizes what is happening. Were there no other geographic names applicable to where it started?
-
Hard to say not knowing the area too well. What I do know is that when a dispatcher is trying to get units on the road with multiple incoming 911 calls, what they name the fire is least of their worries. I have been on fires with names that make no sense to me.
