Today, I talked to a friend who is an Uber driver who has become so deeply depressed. He works all the time & feels like he’s losing his mind. “This is not life,” he said. Precarious, underpaid gig work is not just an economic problem, it is a major public health issue.

Whatever you call it, it's the only form of work which gives me the flexibility to care for our children and support my wife's career, which is why it should be an option to people who want it. It is not "financial precarity."

Glad it works so well for you. It does not for many others, including those who pay a fortune for unsubidized health insurance or can’t afford it. Many people would prefer a full time job with paid time off and a 401(k) and sick days. Working in an insecure market denies these.

The "gig economy" is basically the old informal economy without any of its few benefits (no regulation or taxation).
