It’s absurd that it takes these sort of steps for people to realize just how serious the shutdown is. Just because we have them more often these days, it doesn’t mean they’re any less disruptive and destructive.

Such an important step! This entire saga has been heartbreaking, and if the DOE fails to intervene, it will fundamentally call into question our willingness as a county to uphold the promise of civil rights protections for students.

Compelling, but very conservative. The number unnecessarily incarcerated is probably much higher. Even if all 576,000 Inmates were Released tomorrow, we’d still have the 17th highest prison population per capita in the world, and the highest of any member state.

Shocked this has gone on for as long as it has! There are a lot of important values at play, and we need to respect religious liberty, but these children are being deprived of a credible secular education...at taxpayer expense. The status quo can’t continue.

This argument has all the legal sophistication of a drunk grandpa yelling at an old episode of Law & Order. 🤦‍♂️ When will credible media outlets stop taking this nonsense seriously?

So...the stats that inspired advertisers to leave local papers in droves, gutting local journalism, were a lie? Glad that advertisers will sue, but what do we do to repair the damage to civil society?

One of the most shocking parts of this is that we saw at all happening in real time, and yet there were still those openly pushing to make it worse.

This is a horrifying betrayal of our most basic values. If we can’t find a moral consensus about safeguarding children in our custody, what can we agree on?

This seems like it raises more questions than it answers. Why would they think this is necessary? Had anyone seriously suggested the shutdown would cause a credit freeze up? If not, doesn’t the reassurance plant the very idea they’re trying to stop?

This is surreal and horrifying. DOI is supposed to be a watchdog, not a militia. The fact that this was allowed to go on as long as it did shows just how little accountability there is in for law-enforcement.
