Thanks so much to and CBC Saint John for giving me time to discuss cemeteries and their history this morning. Can't wait to visit Saint John again and see more of the amazing sites there. Those who missed the interview can listen here:

Drummond Hill Cemetery, Niagara Falls, Ontario: A sadly fading gravestone for Jane Eliza Cook, death date unknown (sometime in the nineteenth century). It nonetheless still has poignant imagery of curtains framing a tombstone; the symbolism should be obvious. RIP Jane.

The new (restored?) gates at the Beth Jacobs Jewish Cemetery look so nice! They have both English and Hebrew inscriptions on the columns. It's humbling to see a written language that is over 3,500 years old right here in Regina.

  8. Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St. Catharines, ON: The Chinese Pagoda, erected by "The Chinese Community & Friends." A beautiful spot to stop and collect your thoughts on a summer's day. Canada's multicultural character is reflected in its cemeteries, especially the larger ones.

1976 composite photo from HRM archives of St Paul's cemetery in Dartmouth. Archival info calls it the "Old Indian Cemetery." Settler burials began here in 1835 but it was used for Mi'kmaw burials before that.

  10. St. Mark's Cemetery, Niagara-on-the-Lake: A toppled 19th century stone for Bella Gordon, who died at just 29 from, "Pulmonary congestion with complications." Here the old adage, "In the midst of Life we are in Death," was almost certainly chosen to reflect her short life. RIP.

  11. Vineland Mennonite Burial Ground, ON: Ada Honsberger died at just 32 in 1909 from "Typhoid Pneumonia." Her stone has a dove flying through open gates (of Heaven); on top a tasseled veil lies underneath a Bible. Just below the Bible are the words, "Only Sleeping."
