      1. A few thoughts about this thorough and interesting profile of Mike Pence (thanks to @stephenbottomly for pointing me to it). There's good background here on Pence's religious ideology, ambition, and political career. https://www.theatlantic.com/amp/article/546569/ … #Exvangelical #EmptyThePews

      2. I have a couple of quibbles. This one is fairly trivial, but @mckaycoppins, please take note--I'm a Hoosier, and no one in Indiana considers Columbus "a suburb of Indianapolis." By now, some may consider it an exurb, I suppose, but definitely not a suburb.

      3. More substantively, as is all too typical for @TheAtlantic, I find this piece annoyingly sympathetic to evangelicals' and other conservative Christians' sense of being "beleaguered." THEY. ARE. NOT. PERSECUTED. They are pathological authoritarians #Exvangelical #EmptyThePews

      5. It cannot be overstated what a problem it is when journalism, even otherwise very good journalism, slides over into taking the ideological framing of a group being considered at face value. This is how the Christian Right is winning the framing battle on "religious freedom."

      6. When you define your "religious freedom" as including the right to persecute others, the right to curtail others' freedoms and human rights, then you should be called out for rejecting pluralism and democracy itself. As @kathsstewart did today in @nytimes (thank you!).

6-a. Here's the op-ed referenced in the tweet above. Another intellectual doing fantastic work on tearing down the Christian Right's definition of religious freedom is @FredClarkson. Give him a follow.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/31/opinion/trump-evangelicals-cyrus-king.html …

          7. Not too much else to say, except this. There is a very interesting little gem in this piece regarding Russell Moore, the head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission who in that capacity is expert at getting evangelicals undeserved good press

          8. Russell Moore helped make evangelicals look good during the 2016 election cycle by dissociating evangelicals from Trump. Not that they didn't vote for Trump overwhelmingly. They still support him overwhelmingly. On this general topic see:https://rewire.news/religion-dispatches/2018/11/01/evangelical-pr-blitz-before-midterms-wont-fix-the-81-problem/ …

          9. Russell Moore is not a liberal by any stretch. He believes that pluralism and feminism are literally "heresy" and "serious problems in the church." But just tepidly criticizing Trump support got him in trouble in the SBC. https://www.russellmoore.com/2007/11/10/evangelicalism-today-a-symposium/ … #Exvangelical #EmptyThePewspic.twitter.com/zgTAmHYmLh

          10. Many in the SBC rank and file consider Moore "too liberal," and there was a moment when he nearly lost his job until he came out and "clarified" that voting for Trump was "not a sin." A man of true integrity would have lost his job. #EmptyThePewshttps://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2016/december-web-only/is-it-too-late-to-say-sorry-russell-moore-erlc-sbc-trump.html …

          11. And then during the #ChurchToo movement, Moore got good press for stating that women being abused by their husbands should leave the home and call this police. That's the opposite of what most women hear in SBC churches, but that's also a very low bar for making him a hero.

          12. And here's where I come back to @mckaycoppins's profile of Mike Pence, which includes a telling quote from Moore. Here he is on evangelicals' embrace of Trump: "I think there needs to be a deep reflection on the left about how they helped make this happen." #EmptyThePews

          13. This is the political equivalent of "Stop making me hit you." Moore's quote blaming the Left for evangelicals' embrace of Trump drives home the key point of #ChurchToo criticism of abuse in Christian contexts: that patriarchal theology is inherently abusive.

          14. The corollary to the above, of course, is that if evangelicals refuse to confront their white supremacist patriarchal, anti-LGBTQ theology, they will never be able to root out abuse and sexual harassment and assault in their families, churches, and other institutions.

          15. By going on the record with essentially "Stop making me hit you" relative to evangelical Trump support, Moore is showing us that while he shows a "respectable" face to the public, he still thinks like an abuser. And when he shows us who he is, we should believe him.

It could have been more detailed on who people like Lance Wallnau are—he’s a radical charismatic associated with the New Apostolic Reformation, a dangerous dominionist group—but it’s a solid op-ed. It’s huge that it’s finally possible to say what it says in the Times.

Their definition of "religious freedom" is "my way or the highway." Completely self-centered, authoritarian, patriarchal, cruel and judgmental to anyone who refuses to bow down to their way of thinking.
