Why would the breakdown of shared culture—as @sarahdoingthing pointed out to me a few years ago—result in a preoccupation with authenticity?

Shared culture or not, people try to explain each other’s behavior. If I say something, you’ll have a theory about why. Am I lying, mistaken, serious, joking, coerced, sleep-talking, or what? If lack of shared culture is a problem, it’s because you can’t decide which it is.
