Modern college athletics rests on a set of regressive transfers. The pandemic is revealing this corrupt bargain by forcing shools to cancel money losing sports, slow new building, and reduce salaries. We demonstrate these dynamics in a new paper (1/6)

U.S. needs to gain access to as much of each vaccine as possible, per ⁦

To be clear, when says *big* he doesn't mean stinting on extra doses of vaccines for reasons that remain unexplained and troubling ... we should be aiming to secure enough supply from *each* candidate for all of U.S. Now is not the time for a lean supply chain.

We all should support those in hunger. For example, each year "donate" a lot of money to the federal government. Perhaps my elected officials could get together and redirect some of that money to people who can't work right now because we need their businesses to remain closed.

    2020 biotech dramatized in a 14 hour window ...

Exactly right! The reason I was optimistic we’d get a vaccine is we were taking so many shots. But the plan was some (maybe even many) would fail. Important to realize that despite failure, this was still an *excellent* investment of $2 billion as part of a portfolio strategy.

For those who thought I was overreacting to our shocking inability to secure access to sufficient amounts of *each* vaccine - this is what I was worried about! We won’t be as lucky with each candidate as we were with Pfizer and Moderna and our plans should acknowledge that risk.

In the early months of the vaccine (say until April) we will have more demand than supply. Do we think we'll need to really push people to take the vaccine? How about we give vaccine to everyone who wants it and will supply data and *then* start paying people?

Listen, 2020 has been bad enough, I don't need articles trying to diminish the honor and virtue of the latke. Even if it's true , let's save this content for next year, ok?

I need to work on being less honest, but frankly I'm at a loss as to how we failed to secure our place at the front of the line for massive quantities of vaccine. Occam's razor suggests that every day without an explanation points to sheer incompetence.

This is precisely the wrong way to think about options to purchase vaccines that haven’t been approved and *exactly* the kind of thinking that has led to us being behind on access to early vaccines. Like Canada, we should have exercised huge quantity from *every* vaccine firm!

I really feel we shouldn't be promoting 1960 as the counterpoint to Donald Trump's tweet. Yes, it shows he is wrong. But it is also an election with a lot of accusations of various shennanigans... Perhaps instead we just say -- "even if this were true, you lost this election"

I should also note that there is another great paper on this by Aline Bütikofer and Meghan Skira that looks at this question in Norway.

My job market paper was on Vioxx's positive labor supply effects. Yes, the drug had cardiac risks. But we never fully valued those against its full range of benefits (economic and medical). Seeing Vioxx reemerge to treat these patients brings this issue back to forefront.

Perhaps it might be good for the sake of resetting norms to just take a pass on any appointees that might give even an impression of nepotism ...

Interesting to see in the Oxford/AstraZeneca paper that we get some insight into asymptomatic infections (though only in the low-dose/standard dose group which makes interpretation more difficult)
