Thoughts on the Hafnium Exchange hack: (1) it's going to disproportionately impact those that can least afford it (SMBs, Edu, States, locals), (2) incident response teams are BURNED OUT & this is at a really bad time, (3) few orgs should be running exchange servers these days.https://twitter.com/a_greenberg/status/1367989352366751746 …

Confirming @briankrebs reporting that Chinese group Hafnium has now exploited Microsoft Exchange zero-days to hack tens of thousands of networks. One researcher says 30k servers in the US alone, hundreds of thousands globally. "China just owned the world." https://www.wired.com/story/china-microsoft-exchange-server-hack-victims/ …

So what do you do now? (1) patch (if you haven't already), (2) assume you're owned, look for activity, (3) if you aren't capable of hunting or can't find a team to help, disconnect & rebuild, (4) move to the cloud, (5) pour one out for IR teams, they've had a rough year(s?).

This is a crazy huge hack. The numbers I've heard dwarf what's reported here & by my brother from another mother (@briankrebs). Why, though? Is this a flex in the early days of the Biden admin to test their resolve? Is it an out of control cybercrime gang? Contractors gone wild?pic.twitter.com/cA4lkS4stg

Bad guys exploit vulns all the time. 2020, inter alia, was the year of the bad VPN exploit. But the sheer scale & speed of this one is terrifying. It's trivial to exploit. Countdown to Ransomware? Remember that whole "those that can least afford it thing?" What happens next?

My hypothesis is that it's part of a longer-term demoralization campaign; wait until everyone's licking their wounds from the last big hit, then repeat. Probably expensive to do, but there's a lot of money to be made from the fallout, as well.

Betting a create on 'the intern put that nice 0day into some tool and accidentally ran it on 0/0. Now we had to do _sth._ with it' Burning such a nice 0day so untargeted is... weird. Unless they didn't want to reveal who thr target was.

This is what confuses me. If it's a sophisticated threat actor, why the huge lack of program security? The opposite of targeted. Why expose yourself on so many targets? Seems very irresponsible.
