This is a fairly weak and poorly extrapolated argument. The TL:DR is "Don't collaborate on any paper unless you collect the data yourself OR have months or years of experience with the study organism." This kind of ivory tower thinking limits early career researchers.

Data checking did happen. Standard data exploration techniques did not turn up anything that seemed "weird". You don't generally do data forensics on data you receive from a trusted collaborator, especially a more experienced collaborator when you're a student....

How about a positive thread? What's your favorite manuscript that independently replicates some aspect of a retracted study due to data? I'd love to highlight folks who have been overshadowed. Provide your own, if you have one, especially if you're a student or ECS!!

Re: your first question. Yes (due process matters) and there is an investigation under way. (My dad works at McMaster and they have announced that they are investigating.)

The foundation for collaborative research is (legitimate) trust in the professionalism and integrity of our colleagues. Imho, a “co-author discussion“ is not what is needed now.

One thought I haven’t seen discussed re: - many of the reviews are listed as ok b/c they don’t contain data - but if those reviews rely heavily on Pruitt’s papers to suggest broad patterns, they could have similarly problematic impact, no?

For my students , here is a tale of how to conduct yourself in science following the retraction of multiple papers in animal personality and network research this week

Full account of the last major case of alleged scientific misconduct in behavioral ecology (the AP Møller case). Must-read for anyone interested in A Fluctuating Reality

If people would associate individual mistakes with a whole field, that would be bad science too (N=1)

In our paper () we see that following the controversy about Moller in the late 90s, sexual selection has kept being an active field of research. This episode may have affected the influence of papers led by Moller, as the "Moller" node has then shrinked.

We (, & Gingras) have not analyzed the 2015-20 network, but the 2010-14 one shows that the "Pruitt" node was not as big and central as the "Moller" node in the 90s. I thus think that, in the same way, won't be affected overall.

An important point! If we were to sink whole disciplines based on one event, I suspect that there would be no science left.

Very proud of 's role (with Mike Whitlock's energy behind it) getting accepted as a standard and requirement. I want to re-emphasize, AmNat took a leading role and took a hit in reduced submission at the time. Proud to be affiliated with such a journal

Yes! I hate having to go to the end to look at a figure, and then another page for the figure legend, then try and find where I was in the results, only to do it again and again.
