The R0 (R-nought) of an infectious disease is the average number of people an infected person can infect, if a population is 100% susceptible. For example, if I had flu, and then my mum, dad & sister got it from me my personal R0 would be 3. But if my neighbour also got flu, but

Note that R0 assumes everyone is susceptible. Which would be true for novel coronavirus, but not measles.

It is the intervals that matter here more than the point estimates. A range of 1.4 to 3.8 is covering a vast range of epidemic behaviours. A range of 3.6 to 4.0 is saying something very specific.

I saw the authors of the 3.8 (95% interval: 3.6-4.0) study (a preprint, but I can’t find it) have already revised their estimates down to similar values to the others.
