By the way, none of this is to say that the original data "was false" - apes (as is expected) can indeed be trained and also were actually trained in the task. The data clearly showed this. What was false is the interpretation of the data. The claim of superiority was unwarranted

It was unwarranted because the original paper did not control for the crucial factor here: level of training. Unfortunately, Pandora's box is opened and people see sth they can get excited about. Thats hard to stop.

In some videos, the chimp does 9 numbers. If someone wants to prove that humans can do the same, why use only 5 numbers on the screen?

the chimp overall, across trials (!) had around 80percent success. marie had 84. obviously this is not a single trial. there is a non-trivial chance of getting it right in a single trial. but in any case thats from the tv show - look at the papers cited in the thread.
