You've probably heard by now that a group of nearly 100 Stanford medical faculty wrote an open letter disavowing the claims made by Trump's coronavirus advisor Scott Atlas. I've read the original letter Stanford several times and cannot find anything libelous or even reckless. It's an odd move on Atlas's part. Surely he has to know that his hundred colleagues are not going to back down over this, that Stanford will indemnify them and bring the full weight of its legal team to bear, and that he has no chance of winning in court.
I 'd have thought this threat would be purely bad publicity, creating a Streisand effect for the original letter and painting Atlas as a litigious bully. But he must see it otherwise. He must see it as a signal with positive value to some set of supporters. Whom? And how?
