Interesting observation about the Covid-19 discussion on twitter: In this thread I never advocated for closing schools (or not). I just discussed the science of the Korean study. Yet it brought out a huge number of trolls attacking me for promoting lockdown.https://twitter.com/CT_Bergstrom/status/1284644413470203909 …

As we struggle with the difficult decisions about reopening K-12 schools, one thing I've been unsure about is the degree of transmission by children. A new study from Korea provides high-quality data about this question based on a large sample size. https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/10/20-1315_article …

This is what is happening to people who are trying to engage in public communication of science. The science has become so politicized that a study is deemed ideologically correct or incorrect, and then we are attacked for even trying to explore the nuances of what it says.

To be clear, I'm not going to let a few trolls keep me from talking about the science of Covid on twitter. It is interesting to me, as someone who studies misinformation and disinformation. And I sympathize with those like to do scicomm but don't enjoy the continual attacks.

Only a tiny fraction of people are genuinely keen to explore reality, the rest are busy defending whatever view they hold ignoring evidence to the contrary.

I disagree. The trolls are the loudest, but a sizeable majority is willing to listen to the science wherever that may lead. Thanks, Dr. Bergstrom for your valuable contributions against the bullshit peddlers.

How exactly do you define “trolls?” Granted i didn’t read every tweet & I don’t know Twitter’s algorithm but I didn’t read many personal attacks, just a lot of questions.

It has also shifted to criticism and outright hate toward teachers who are reluctant to go back to school & be exposed to COVID. Claiming teachers are lazy, selfish, stupid, don’t care about students’ mental health, etc.

It's not nice to act like everyone pushing back on your take here is a troll. Probably there are some mean trolls here but then you should be clear that you are also facing legitimate criticisms from a scientific perspective. It’s incredible how we jump to conclusions looking at a single study, especially about a topic as emotive as children. It is sad to see many have bought into the NYT story about the SK transmission study. Pls read this great thread, @apsmunro brings nuanced interpretation. https://twitter.com/apsmunro/status/1284794506265722881 …

well said @WesPegden and another reason why there should be open (to the public and media) scientific debates and discussions, among scientists and other qualified professionals about these matters. So far there have been none and here we are months later ...relying on twitter
