I'm not saying this is directly applicable to antifa/alt right but there may be some things you can extrapolate from it.

The opposition to violecne as a desirable rule of thumb should not lead us to the pitfall of failing to recognize it might be needed at times. Were antifa not in charlotesville, and heather Heyer would not be the only one we'd be lamenting.

And were the counter protests entirely peaceful, they'd still be demonizing us somehow. See how Kapernick was lambasted. Governments, at least these governments, and the media are not on our side, by and large, at least not when certain interests begin to be threathened..

On the contrary, their interests are better served by portraying any and all dissent, indifferent to context, as a negative moral absolute. Which is why agent provocateurs (shown below provoking cops and then making arrests) were effective dissuading protests in my country.pic.twitter.com/7RKuk5GPOS

country. We should look beyond that however, and remember that social conquests for civil rights were only peaceful until they weren't. Stonewall, baltimore riots, Rodney king are all examples of this. It's something we've forgotten in recent years, I think.

MLK did not condone violence, but, and this is no less important, he was reluctant to condemn it either and epythomizes what i mean by "speak softly, carry a big stick". The more we see past the attempts to demonize, the better we can organize and mobilize. And boy, do we need to

Another thing, we've been focusing on the pragmatic argument, but it's worth mentioning that all else being equal non-violence would be the moral path. Meaning that if violence and non-violence were equally effective non-violence would be preferable.

Why you ask? Because we are a product of our environment, and many of us leftists if we had been born in the same conditions as some of these Fash we'd be giving the Hitler solute too, and visa versa. Plus that allows us to further distinguish ourselves from our enemies.

I didn't ask, actually- I think violence is at best a "lesser evil" sort of thing. Worth it to prevent greater violence or protect the innocent but not something I would choose with a better/ equal option.

Sure, and I'm not an absolute pacifist. Even MLK kept firearms for personal safety. In terms of the political realm though, it seems to be the best strategy we have at our disposal for achieving political ends.
