the proverbial talk softly and carry a big stick, as it were. Our first anti austerity protests in portugal were massive (over 1 mil in a single protest), effective - and peaceful. When police used force during a strike, resistance quickly eroded as the goverment quickly 1/

peddled the narrative of the violent protestor (with undercover cops shit stirring, I might add), dividing and conquering between those who were willing to take it a step further and those who understandably feared for their safety. Further peaceful protestes were toothless 2/2

My answer to that would be the Heather Hyer incident. Charlottesville was the largest fash rally in the country yet and antifa have been painted as extremely violent. But with the footage of a peaceful dissenter being mowed down it still hurt them immensely.

Another thing you said worth commenting on is the use of agent provocateurs by police. Why would they do that if violence was so effective against them? Are they incompetent or misguided? I happen to believe they are neither violence is just easier for them to demonize and crush.

I'm not saying this is directly applicable to antifa/alt right but there may be some things you can extrapolate from it.

The opposition to violecne as a desirable rule of thumb should not lead us to the pitfall of failing to recognize it might be needed at times. Were antifa not in charlotesville, and heather Heyer would not be the only one we'd be lamenting.

And were the counter protests entirely peaceful, they'd still be demonizing us somehow. See how Kapernick was lambasted. Governments, at least these governments, and the media are not on our side, by and large, at least not when certain interests begin to be threathened..

On the contrary, their interests are better served by portraying any and all dissent, indifferent to context, as a negative moral absolute. Which is why agent provocateurs (shown below provoking cops and then making arrests) were effective dissuading protests in my country.pic.twitter.com/7RKuk5GPOS

country. We should look beyond that however, and remember that social conquests for civil rights were only peaceful until they weren't. Stonewall, baltimore riots, Rodney king are all examples of this. It's something we've forgotten in recent years, I think.

Yes there is a ton of anecdotes on both sides. Which is why we have to look at the overall data for a better understanding. I'm not positing that violence has never achieved anything substantial.
