I sincerely hope my work on this book can be an extension of the intention behind this account as well. It’s been amazing studying the ways game developers turned the weaknesses of the Game Boy’s unique display into strengths.

This gorgeous new book from that I am contributing to is now available for preorder! For months I’ve been hard at work on a deep dive of the Game Boy hardware, its unique display technology, and the philosophy behind its design. Check it out!

Progress is going well. I got tired of pulling out cables whenever I wanted to test composite, so I bought another switcher and also set up optional composite cables for every console. Do not develop my broken brain.

Thank you everyone for your help with improving our sharp screenshots. I was having multiple issues, but I now have solutions to pretty much all of them. Side note: Don't upload high quality images using the Twitter app. Stick to browser. See you soon!

The main point here being that there is next to no discernible difference between the two outside of calibration, but RGB tends to get far more press simply because it’s rarer in the US region. Whatever gets you playing games easiest is what you should go for.

Worst TVs in existence honestly. If you’re getting into CRTs, avoid these projection TVs at all costs. Folks in the replies sharing their cheap little childhood bedroom CRTs ironically had better displays than their parents did in the living room.

Gyruss (1988, Konami) - NES Sharp Pixels vs. AV Famicom Composite via Sony KV-27S42 This one isn’t meant to be zoomed in on unless you want face full of warped corner convergence, but the Discord really liked this so I thought I’d share.

Phantasy Star IV (1995, Sega) - Genesis/Mega Drive Sharp Pixels vs. Genesis RGB via Sony PVM-20L2MD I just can’t get enough of Phantasy Star IV over RGB. I’d really like to try it over component on my D-Series sometime as well.

I had originally planned to use the NES’ composite output for this comparison, but I find NES composite (left) so noisy and crunchy so I went with the softer look of RF (right). Mainly visible in the brown blocks. In a couple more weeks we might have another option though 👀

Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996, Capcom) - SNES Sharp Pixels vs. SNES S-Video via Sony KV-27S42 I’m a bit rusty, but trying to get back in the saddle. Street Fighter Alpha 2’s SNES port has been really impressing me lately, what an accomplishment.

I am still unable make new content for you all quite yet, so I’ve made a list of some excellent folks you can support in the meantime. Thank you to all the creators listed here (and far, far more) for keeping me going in 2022.

Here is a playlist of 100 of my favorite video game YouTube channels. One video per channel, larger channels mostly at the bottom to help you discover smaller channels first. I hope this brings you as much joy as these creators have brought me. youtube.com/playlist?list=

This early example of mine isn’t up to my current standards, but you can still see just how different Tactics Ogre Reborn’s smoothed sprites look from the original’s gorgeous art, which is stunning both raw and via a CRT. Look forward to a new, better comparison tomorrow.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996, Capcom) - Arcade Sharp Pixels vs. MiSTer YPbPr via JVC AV-20D202 I absolutely love the way the JVC D-series softens up even the sharpest inputs. Here you can still see tons of blending despite using Component. Very similar to an arcade monitor.

My wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer on top of several other medical issues between the two of us. Fortunately, the kindness of friends and strangers has given us so much hope this week and we are less than $700 away from our Gofundme goal.

Pocky & Rocky (1992, Natsume) - SNES Sharp Pixels vs. SNES S-Video via JVC AV-20202 Pocky & Rocky fans stay winning in 2022. Nothing could ever replace playing original on a CRT for me, but the new Pocky & Rocky: Reshrined could probably get close.

My wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer. On top of a recent surgery for a severed Achilles and my two chronic pain diagnoses. It’s been a hell of a year. I never thought I’d ask, but if you’re able, we could use some help. gofundme.com/f/help-mitzi-s

Streets of Rage (1991, Sega) - Genesis/Mega Drive Sharp Pixels vs. Genesis Composite via Sony KV-14M10 My girl Blaze deserved 2nd look on a set that handles composite better. Although Genesis’ noisy composite still eats a bit of her hair, it softens her features up nicely.

Super Street Fighter II (1994, Capcom) - SNES Sharp Pixels vs. SNES S-Video via Sony PVM-20L2MD Super Street Fighter II probably has my favorite character portraits in the series and to me they never look quite right on anything but a CRT.
