New in @CRISPRjournal: He Jiankui’s group proposes a set of 5 core values to frame, guide, and restrict clinical applications of gene editing technologies. #GeneEditSummit https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/crispr.2018.0051 …pic.twitter.com/LGDPqx9fyP

In my opinion, the ethics of such experiments should be reviewed and debated BEFORE they are attempted.

Don’t necessarily disagree, but (like almost everyone else) we were unaware that this group was actively pursuing clinical work.

So this group submitted a research ethics statement about research they were concurrently performing, and submitted it to a journal without informing the journal about the obvious conflict?

Now that you are aware, are you considering retraction by any chance? You will agree with me this article is seriously flawed. Starting from ethics.

The article is an opinion/commentary piece that was peer-reviewed. Readers may or may not agree with the authors’ proposals. We will however seek further information on relevant disclosures and update accordingly.

This seems absurd. He cannot cover his tracks by coincidentally proposing this after the research was done. In my opinion it is an insult to those who have worked hard at ensuring best practice in the Lab and have engaged in ongoing public discussion to include all stakeholders

I am sorry you were unaware of the work being done but we don't know yet if it is true. The disclosure statement is highly problematic to me. the second author is a press release person http://images.acspubs.org/Web/AmericanChemicalSociety/%7B4353e48c-96f1-4cf7-b39a-309ced0f8024%7D_C_EN_Media_Group_Agency_Profile_-_HDMZ.pdf …

There needs to be an editorial note on this paper that explains what editorial decisions (if any) you're making about this.

You can’t draft & apply core values retroactively & call that ethics. Ever tried to put toothpaste back in the tube? Ethics (especially when considering technologies that alter the human genome) should only arise from broad, gritty, divergent & robust public debate & discourse.

These are not ethical principles. These are justifications. The world needs are guidelines for oversight based on science, an understanding of the risk-benefits to the child and to society, and good medical practice. This sort of work has to be done and debated in the open.

This is the gaslighting version of research. The fact this article was peer-reviewed and published is evidence of how rampant religious preaching still is: "Do as I say not as I do"

Dr. He--and his team of scientists--have a definition of ethics which doesn't comport well with the rest of the world which is exactly why gene editing, in general, will be realistically impossible to regulate without public education and appropriate policy.
