  5. Courage certainly is standing up to power when it is inconvenient and there is likely to be retribution. The Sen. Mitt Romney vote absolutely fits that definition of courage and is historic. ... whatever else you might say of him & his stances, past, present, or future.

  9. Recent controversies across the U.S. about the historical dimensions of (de)naming, monuments, & much more cast into sharp relief the stakes & significance of representing the past accurately & ethically, even if that history is challenging & generates additional debate.

Given Rand Paul's outing of a whistleblower, it would seem that his philosophy can no longer be called "libertarian" - so what should it be termed?

Hard to think we haven't descended in a tragic-comic sense, all too reminiscent of Idiocracy. For a laugh, check out President Camacho's State of the Union

Or FDR's January 6, 1941, with Europe aflame, he warned that "at no previous time has American security been as seriously threatened from without as it is today." And closed by outlining the “four essential human freedoms” as a foundation for a secure, prosperous world.

Consider, in contrast, December 1, 1862, Abraham Lincoln's annual message to Congress when he powerfully argued for the link between the Union and the abolition of slavery: "Without slavery the rebellion could never have existed; without slavery it could not continue."

Today is the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment's ratification, granting black men the constitutional right to vote. But as Barbara Fields so powerfully reminds us here, the fight for equality — at the ballot box & elsewhere — did not end there & indeed still rages on today.
