What about the sentence “the performance of the cadets was too varied to see if ability grouping hurt or helped?” Doesn’t that mean you can’t tell?

That’s my interpretation too. I suspect there’s non linear effects. If lower skilled students were disruptive then that would likely be impactful. WP doesn’t tend to have disruptive cadets I’d guess.
